How Much Charcoal or Wood Do I Need for a Braai?
A simple guide to fuel by number of guests — so you never run out mid-braai.

Quick guide by group size
These are rough starting points for a normal braai of chops, wors, steak and chicken. Wind, cold weather and big cuts need more.
| Guests | Charcoal / briquettes | Braai wood |
|---|---|---|
| 2–4 | 2–3 kg (about one 4 kg bag) | 1 bag (about 10–15 kg) |
| 6–8 | 4–5 kg | 1–2 bags |
| 10–12 | 6–8 kg | 2 bags |
| 15–20 | 10–12 kg | 3 bags |
How long does each fuel last?
- Lump charcoal: very hot, lasts about 1 hour of good cooking heat.
- Briquettes: lasts about 1.5–2 hours — best for long cooks and chicken.
- Hardwood coals: 1–1.5 hours, and you can keep a side fire going to feed fresh coals.
Pro tips
- Always buy a bit extra. Leftover charcoal keeps; a braai that runs out of heat doesn't.
- For big groups, keep a small 'feeder' fire burning to one side and shovel new coals across as needed.
- Store charcoal somewhere dry — damp charcoal is slow to light and smokes.
Quick answers
- How much charcoal for 10 people?
- Roughly 6–8 kg of charcoal or briquettes, or about two bags of braai wood.
- Can I mix wood and charcoal?
- Yes. Many braaiers light charcoal for fast, even heat and add a few logs for flavour and atmosphere.
